I really like how the B part doesn't hit the top note 1st time through, but you only notice when it does the 2nd time through. Nicely done.

How do you pronounce it? I heard a well known piper pronounce it "fries" britches... but I think many Americans say "freeze" britches.

Thanks.

Hi Harry.

I've been enjoying your musical diary for some time and want to thank you for taking the trouble to share this with us.

I particularly like this tune and wondered where your setting came from. I'm particularly interested in getting a good setting with lots of articulation in it from an older source musician like Ennis, Clancy etc. Would you recommend a recording?

This is the first place I ever heard this tune, and the version I mostly play. http://www.rogermillington.com/tunetoc/firstmonthofsummer.html

Padraig MacMathuna recorded it as well.

It seems most North American musicians know the version in A (that I believe Andy McGann recorded) - aka the fiddle version.

I always thought it was The Epilectic Landlady.
And attached the "ar lar" title to the Donegal tune that starts dcd|AGFE D2 DF|GEFE D etc...

Ooh tricketry setting.
And here's Mick and Aoife: http://tinyurl.com/77zdv9n
I like how they occasionally don't go to the top A to finish the first part, just up to the G. Mournful touch.

H Bill,

Yeah, looks to me like 'The Woman of the House on the Floor' (i.e. dancing), but people mostly know it in English by the handle 'The Woman of the House'. There are several or more variations on it, as there are of most very popular tunes.

I'm sure there are variations in the title as well. I'll happily defer to Prof. Sproule on matters concerning the Gaelic tongue.

Regards,

H.

Harry, you've named this tune Bean A’Tí Ar Lar. This title has been the subject of question in my circle. I don't have any Irish to speak of, but my friends who do, including Daithi Sproule, have been pondering the meaning of that phrase, but mostly in regards to the tune commonly called "The Woman of the House On the Floor". The question has to do with the "ar lar" part, which I understand is unclear.

On your second CD you play the more common tune, which you call "The Lady of the House", and now you've got another tune which I am not familiar with. I doesn't surprise me, since the woman of the house is a subject worth writing tunes about.

What's your take on the Irish words?

Best,
Bill

PS, lovely playing as always.

I'd be interested to know the first recording / written record of this version of the tune (two parts, starting on B). The earliest written record of the Fox Chase is in O'Farrell's, and in that the tune at the end is a five part version of the Foxhunter's Slip Jig, the first three parts are very similar to the regular four part version. But, I think that it is written in a way that implies Hop Jig rather than Slip Jig, too. I don't think they made that distinction much in 1804, though!

It could be! I was listening to Ennis again while getting lunch and I think he does play it more marchy than hornpipey. It got me thinking again about all the tunes that fall somewhere on the spectrum of slide, fling, barndance, hornpipe, march...

A couple interesting links: http://www.ibiblio.org/fiddlers/HAR.htm#HARE_IN/AMONG_THE_CORN_[3]

http://www.ibiblio.org/fiddlers/FOU_FOY.htm#FOX_CHASE_[3]

I'd love more information on An Maidrin Ruad, but I recall reading something about it somewhere... maybe in the Goodman collection?

Thanks,

Nicolas

Hi Nicholas,

Good call on the 'slip jig' thang.

That next part of the piece is the air of An Maidrín Ruad ('The Little Red Dog' or 'The Fox'), which is an old Gaelic song. It may predate the Fox Chase, or maybe it had words put to it afterwards. I'm not sure about that. It's generally considered a march I think.

Regards,

Harry.

Well, since I'm on a roll being a nuissance, I have always thought of the tune/part after the opening as a hornpipe, rather than a march. The four-part version in O'Farrell's certainly seems hornpipey to me, but I am having trouble bringing Ennis' version to mind at the moment. Maybe on my drive to lunch...

(As an aside, the anti-spam bot text displayed for this post is "pinery" which is the name of a national park / camp ground in Ontario between Sarnia and Goderich... Just found that a curious coincidence)
